The luncheon table also provides many possibilities for glass collectibles. The places and cup might be made of glass, and the luncheon place setting might include the main plate, a salad place, a bread and butter plate, a soup bowl and plate, a fruit bowl, a cup and saucer, and a desert bowl and plate. In a set for twelve, that’s a lot of glass pieces.
There would also be glasses and pitchers for drinks served cool. Serving platters and bowls, and sauce boats made of glass would grace a luncheon. Coffee pots and tea pots, with attendant cream and sugar serving pieces could make an appearance. A desert service might include a stand with several levels, jam jars, cream pitchers and maybe even a honey jar.
The table would be decorated with place card holders, which might be made of glass. Glass candle holders and flower vases would grace the table with light and color. If the luncheon has a theme besides food, appropriate glass figures might be included in the decorations. Glass boxes and small open dishes hold mints, and there might even be finger bowls at each place.
Sounds like a lot of collecting possibilities. For each item there are many manufacturers and patterns, and a lot of years to cover. Considerable time would be needed to accumulate a definitive collection of any one item, but there’s not really any hurry. A hobby, a collection is about long-term satisfaction.
Once you know what you want to collect, and something about the people who make that particular item, trips to flea markets, second-hand shops, garage sales and the Internet become an exploration, a hunt for your next piece. Will today be the day you find the one you have been looking for?
