Fruits and Vegetables

Well, fall is here. Time to trot out the cornucopia, harvest fruits and vegetables, fall leaves and set up a display of the bounty of nature. You can use real gourds, pumpkins, apples, and nuts, or you can use glass fruit and vegetables.

Many kinds of vegetables are reproduced in glass.

While these same items can be found made in ceramic or plastic, I prefer glass ones. I have apples in every color (green, red and yellow), an orange, 2 ears of corn, cherries, grapes and a pumpkin. I have also seen bell peppers in all colors (green, red, yellow and orange), bananas, jalapenos (in red, yellow and green), avocados, tomatoes, zucchini and yellow squash. I am sure there are more glass vegetables available. And as I list the ones I’ve seen and did not buy, a great desire to acquire them has come over me. And maybe I’ll see glass acorns and nuts someday. That would be a nice addition.

Most of the glass fruits and vegetables are made in China or Mexico, and the quality varies considerably. So look around and only buy those which satisfy your standards. Any store or market that has seasonal items is a potential source. And they are available online, but you cannot really see the quality until you have already bought. I don’t know about you, but I am not good about returning things, so I try to buy in person. Dollar stores or what used to be dime stores, like Family Dollar and Dollar General, may have glass fruit and vegetables on occasion.

There is one area where you can expect excellent quality: glass pumpkins. Several years ago in Seattle, a charity event requested and received pumpkins from glass artists in the area. A pumpkin patch was formed, and customers wandered freely, finding pumpkins and keeping those they wanted. The event was a great success, and has been repeated every year since. And glass artists everywhere now create pumpkins of various fanciful colors and sell them. The pumpkin shape is on interesting one to form in glass, and the size can be varied as well as the colors. So, keep an eye out for artist created pumpkins, and get yourself some.

If you see glass acorns and nuts, let me know.
