Desk and Coffee Table

There a number of items that can be found on the desk or table top that are made out of glass. Let’s start with the desk.

Glass in and out trays are available for those people who have large desk tops where stacking trays are not needed. Glass in-and-out trays would also make great gifts to someone who has everything, including a large desk. Along with the in-and-out trays, there are glass business card holders, pencil cups, paperclip holders, letter openers, clocks, pen trays, pen station, rulers, tape holders, etc. About everything that is made for the desk can be found made in glass except, maybe, the stapler, scissors and the actual paper clips. The versatility of glass can be readily seen in this: where there is plastic now, there once was glass. In addition, glass provides the magnifying glass found on the desks of those of us who need a little help with the fine print.

Dip pens, where you dip the point of the pen in ink and write until the ink is gone, are currently available to amaze your friends and family. They are not actually very useful and are a lot of trouble, but they do look nice in a pen tray on the desk. This form of writing in the past also engendered sanders, ink blotters, ink bottles, and ink wells made from glass and all collectible.

Engraved glass name plates are popular and easy to find.  Victorinox, the Swiss army knife people, have a rule that has embedded not only a magnifying section, but also a compass and the thermometer. All in three inches. Cool.

In the past, the desktop would also have a matching set of a glass ashtray, cigarette box or holder, lighter, match holder, match safe, and maybe a cigar box or humidor. The number of shapes, sizes, colors and ornamentation of ashtrays boggles the mind. Produced since the importation of tobacco to Europe from the Americas, the disposal of the results of use have requires various receptacles. Glass spittoons for personal or general use are out there, hopefully dark colored so the contents are hidden from view. Glass pipes and hookahs are available, both old and new.

The beauty of glass as far as smoking is concerned is that glass will ensure that the fire will go no further than the glass receptacle itself.

Glass cigarette holders are also a possibility for collection. Early ones may have produces as whimsies, end of the day exercises in fancy, but eventually they were mass produced.

The coffee table would also have had the smoking ensemble, in the past.
